“Confined Coherence” in Strongly Correlated, Anisotropic Metals

چکیده
We present a detailed discussion of both theoretical and experimental evidence in favour of the existence of states of “confined coherence” in metals of sufficiently high anisotropy and with sufficiently strong correlations. The defining property of such a state is that single electron coherence is confined to lower dimensional subspaces (planes or chains) so that it is impossible to observe interference effects between histories which involve electrons moving between these subspaces. The most dramatic experimental manifestation of such a state is the coexistence of incoherent, non-metallic transport in one or two directions (transverse to the lower dimensional subspaces) with coherent transport in at least one other direction (within the subspaces). The magnitude of the Fermi surface warping due to transverse (inter-subspace) momentum plays the role of an order parameter (in a state of confined coherence, this order parameter vanishes) and the effect can occur in a pure system at zero temperture. Our theoretical approach is to treat an anisotropic 2D (3D) electronic system as a collection of 1D (2D) electron liquids coupled by weak interliquid single particle hopping. We find that a necessary condition for the destruction of coherent interliquid transport is that the intraliquid state be a non-Fermi liquid. We present a very detailed discussion of coupled 1D Luttinger liquids and the reasons for believing in the existence of a phase of confined coherence in that model. This provides a paradigm for incoherent transport between weakly coupled 2D non-Fermi liquids, the case relevant to the experiments of which we are aware. Specifically, anomalous transport data in the (normal state of the) cuprate superconductors and in the low temperature, metallic state of the highly anisotropic organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6 cannot be understood within a Fermi liquid framework, and, we argue, the only plausible way to understand that transport is in terms of

The Quantum-Classical Metal
In a normal Fermi liquid, Landau’s theory precludes the loss of single fermion, quantum coherence in the low energy/temperature limit. For highly anisotropic, strongly correlated metals there is no proof that this remains the case: we propose that quantum coherence for transport in some directions may be lost intrinsically. This should stabilize a novel, qualitatively anisotropic non-Fermi liqu...

We present a mean field treatment of a strongly correlated model of electrons in a three–dimensional anisotropic system. The mass of the bare electrons is larger in one spatial direction (the c–axis direction), than in the other two (the ab–planes). We use a slave fermion decomposition of the electronic degrees of freedom and show that there is a transition from a deconfined to a confined phase...
متن کاملTwo New Non-AFR Criteria for Depicting Strength Differential Effect (SDE) in Anisotropic Sheet Metals
The issue of pressure sensitivity of anisotropic sheet metals is investigated with introducing two new non-AFR criteria which are called here linear and non-Linear pressure sensitive criteria. The yield and plastic potential functions of these criteria are calibrated with directional tensile/compressive yield stresses and directional tensile Lankford coefficients, respectively. To determine unk...

Structural order parameters of a smectic liquid crystal confined into the columnar form of porous silicon are studied using neutron scattering and optical spectroscopic techniques. It is shown that both the translational and orientational anisotropic properties of the confined phase strongly couple to the one-dimensional character of the porous silicon matrix. The influence of this confinement ...

The cuprate superconductors and certain organic conductors exhibit transport which is qualitatively anisotropic, yet at the same time other properties of these materials strongly suggest the existence of a Fermi surface and low energy excitations with substantial free electron character. The former of these features is very difficult to account for if the material possesses three dimensional co...
